● Become knowledgeable about coaching techniques appropriate for the skills for the age
you are coaching, and do your best to plan practices that are challenging and fun for all
players.
● Understand that as a volunteer coach, you are representing NPYSA.
● Create and maintain a safe environment at practices and games.
● Encourage your team members to play by the rules and respect the rights of other
players, coaches, spectators and officials.
● Remember that the game is for the children, not the adults or you as the coach; making
mistakes is part of learning.
● Place the well-being of the players ahead of any personal desire to win.
● Use positive feedback and encouragement and not yell at players during practices or
games.
● Treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of differences in
emotional and physical development for the same age group.
● When every player gets equal playing time, it creates a level playing field where
everyone can contribute to the team's success. (Do not restrict players from playing due
to poor attendance at practice as they may have other scheduled activities.)
● Be a positive role model with regard to character, sportsmanship and attitude, you are
representing NPYSA, and your team is looking up to you..
● Respect coaches and players from the opposing team before, during and after the game
● Take appropriate steps to minimize running up the score in games that your team is
clearly dominating.
● Meet and greet officials and opponent coaches to set the proper tone of the game.
● Referee abuse is not tolerated by our organization. Including but is not limited to
shouting dissent over a call from the sidelines, criticizing the referee’s performance in
front of players, debate over a call or the referee’s performance after the game has
finished, or other acts of disrespect toward the referee or game officials.
● Do not address the referee during the game; if you have a small issue, discuss it with the
referee calmly and patiently at halftime or after the game. For any major complaint, or if
you think the referee was unfair, biased, unfit or incompetent, report this opinion to a
board member with the knowledge that comments will be taken seriously.
● We will not tolerate inappropriate behavior from players regardless of the situation.
During the game, coaches are responsible for the sportsmanship of the players. If a
player is disrespectful, irresponsible or overly aggressive, take that player out of the
game to calm them down.

● If there is an issue on the field during a game, it must be reported to the NPYSA
President immediately following the game (during Rec Season) or the Competitive
Coordinator (during Superliga Competitive Season). This includes any Yellow or Red
Cards issued during the game and misconduct by any parents or spectators.
● Arrive to all games and practices 15 mins early. (Field Youth Soccer does understand
that at times this will not be possible, but those situations shall be rare)
● Communicate with all team participants of any game changes, practice changes and
reminders as necessary in a timely fashion.
● The use of profanity or abusive language or exhibit abusive behavior at games or
practices will result in immediate game suspensions and/or immediate dismissal.
● Encourage parents to applaud and cheer for good plays by either team and discourage
anyone from yelling at players and the referee, and coaching from the sidelines. Send a
copy of the Parent’s Code of Conduct to all parents of your team, and hold them
accountable to adhere to it.
● Do your part to ensure officials have the support of coaches, players, and spectators.
Criticism of officials undermines their purpose in the game.

1. Verbal warning with a plan to change the action or lack thereof.
2. An emergency meeting with the board to discuss changes which need to be made.
3. Immediate dismissal from the role of coaching, with no option to return to the role in
future seasons.
